Martha Whittington + Industries for the Blind
Make a thing. Touch a sculpture. Rely on the tactile senses.
What is the role of the hand in our work?
In thinking about collectivity, we think about work, the mainstay of daily life. Artists wrestle with ideas of productivity which structure economic production in their own studio. How can they surmount the expectations of functionality and usefulness in their own production? How can they provoke us in turn to think about labor and usefulness?
Whittington will join workers affiliated with Industries for the Blind, a Greensboro-based organization that is one of SECCA’s partners. Together, the artist and workers will use objects they have made as a way to talk about making using all of the senses.
